What Is Soil Stabilization?

Bradly Built, Inc uses soil stabilization to enhance the soil's physical properties. Stabilization increases the strength of soil and can control the shrink-swell properties of soil. This can be utilized in several areas:

  • Roadways
  • Parking areas
  • Site development projects
  • Airports
  • And more

There are several benefits to soil stabilization, including:

  • Higher resistance
  • Reduced plasticity
  • Low permeability
  • Reduced pavement thickness
  • Elimination of excavation - exporting unsuitable material and importing new material

Process of Soil Stabilization

With all stabilization projects, you want to maintain proper design and testing. Testing helps to establish the proper design criteria which determine the proper additive and admixture rate to achieve specific engineering properties. Having a geotechnical engineer is an important component of a successful project to solicit expert advice and engineering knowledge for all soil stabilization projects.

  • Soil stabilization begins by adding the additive per the geotechnical firm’s recommendation on top of the problematic material. This additive is mixed and re-mixed with the soil until the desired properties are achieved.
  • The new base is shaped by a motor grader or bulldozer to the proper profile and compacted.
  • The building pad or roadway materials are added to the specifications or design.

What Is Soil Modification?

Another form of soil treatment is soil modification. Although some stabilization inherently occurs in soil modification, the distinction between the two is that soil modification is merely a means to reduce the moisture content of the soil to expedite construction.

Soil stabilization can increase the strength of a material such that it can be incorporated into the project´s structure. The determining factors associated with soil modification versus soil stabilization may be the existing moisture content and the end use of the soil structure.
